Lesson 2 of 4

How to Read the Bible in Context

Most misreadings of Scripture come from ignoring context — historical, literary, and textual. Before asking "what does this mean to me," first ask "what did this mean to its original audience, and what kind of writing is this?"

A Psalm should be read as poetry, a Gospel as historical narrative with theological purpose, an epistle as an occasional letter addressing real situations. Genre shapes meaning.
