Does the Bible contradict itself?
Skeptics point to contradictions in the Bible. How should I think about apparent discrepancies?
Most alleged "contradictions" fall apart under closer reading. Many are differences of perspective (the Gospels report the same event from different angles, like witnesses at a car accident), differences of detail selection (one author includes information another omits), or misunderstandings of genre (poetry read as if it were a science textbook).
A genuine contradiction would require two statements that cannot both be true in the same sense at the same time. When examined carefully — checking the original languages, historical context, and literary genre — the vast majority of claimed contradictions resolve naturally.
That said, honest study, not defensiveness, is the right posture: some passages are genuinely difficult, and it's fine to say "I don't yet know how to resolve this" while trusting the Bible's overall demonstrated reliability.
