Is evolution compatible with Christianity?

Can someone believe in evolution and still be a faithful, Bible-believing Christian?

Christians hold a range of views here in good conscience, and it isn't a salvation issue. Some hold to young-earth creationism (a recent, literal six-day creation), others to old-earth creationism (an ancient universe with direct divine acts of creation), and others to evolutionary creation (God using an evolutionary process).

What unites faithful Christians across these views is affirming that God is the personal Creator of everything, that Adam and Eve were real historical persons, and that humanity uniquely bears God's image. Genesis 1-2 is clearly making theological claims (God alone is Creator, creation is good, humanity is made in His image) even among those who debate how literally to read its details.

Whichever view you hold, it's worth studying Genesis carefully in its ancient context rather than assuming modern scientific questions were the author's main concern.
